Mexican Flag

A Mariachi is a group of 8-12 individuals (traditionally men) who use a variety of string instruments and trumpets to perform various types of music that help to convey Mexican folklore. Throughout Latin America and the United States, they are recognized as an integral part of Mexican popular culture.  In Mexico, popular culture has been an important means of promoting Mexican nationalism (Mulholland 249, 2007).  Their unique outfits and performances of rancheras as the primary music genre helps to convey specific elements of the rich and complex history of Mexico and sentiment of national identity.
